I got my D.L. at 16 and if I had been the administrator of the test today I wouldn't give me a liscence until I had turned 21. I did many foolish things in the interim in those ages. I was very lucky I grew up in a very rural community. Not too much traffic.

Personally I think it's more a lack of education rather than age. I had to take drivers ed for a summer, at my high school, and had to pass before I received my learners permit. At 16 + 1 month, I could take my drivers test.....if you failed....you had to start all over again........

I think maybe they could keep the driving age at 16 "but" for 1 year only be able to drive with a related parent in the car. The one year rule would apply to new 17 year old drivers as well. This would lead to better early driving habits.

peglet1962 - Yes, I am a parent. I would guess that I am not related to most new drivers. I could, however, teach them my "spirited" driving techniques but I don't think that would be such a good idea.

Your point of being "nice" was not lost on me. Thanks.

Today, the youth does not have the responsibilities that several of us had. I personally was babysitting by the age of 11, going to the store for my Mom, being left home from the age of 10, while the folks went out for a few hours. There was no way I could do that with my kids, so I personally didn't let them get their license until they were 18. Also, they had to pay for their own car insurance once they got their license, since that really can break the bank for most parents that have more than one teenager!

My dad started teaching me to drive when i was 9 on the ranch. By the time i was 15 i was driving a semi during harvest. Now considering the job i do now i have seen people in their 20s 30s and 40s that shouldnt ever be allowed to drive anything that is motorized.
