BE INFORMED ABOUT SICKLE CELL DISEASE This is a subject that is very dear to my heart. My granddaughter Jamie was diagnosed with Sickle Cell Disease at birth. I have tried to learn everything there is to know about this subject. Jamie had two strokes back to back in 2000 when she was only 8 years old. Since then, she has had to receive blood transfusions every three weeks. After receiving transfusions for a year, she had to be put on Desferol injections for 10 hours a day to prevent Iron overload. We did her's at bedtime so that she could go to school. In 2006, they came out with a pill called ExJade which took the place of Desferol. (Thank God) She has to dissolve the pills in water or whatever her favorite beverage is and drink it. Jamie gets tired of taking medication but as I've often told her, the alternative is worse. They are trying to prevent another stroke. She was blessed to still be able to function after the other two. She lost the use of her left hand and she is not as sharp as she was originally, but who knows what another one will do.
