Tell Co-Workers They’re Awful With Someecards Submitted by Gary Schultheis on Monday, 5 January 2009View commentsComments Hallmark cards are terribly lame. Even their supposed offbeat, off-color Shoebox selections have self-destructive zingers apparently torn from “Cathy” comics. It seems that if you want to send a truly funny greeting card these days, you need to write it yourself. Or you can let Someecards.com do the sarcastic posturing. Someecards has inappropriate greetings for every occasion, but the workplace-focused cards are easily the best. The simple, sarcastic copy is complemented by minimalist , plucky illustrations. What about a card depicting some 1800s traders on a canoe in the wilderness claiming, “They can’t lay us off if they can’t find us.” Or another card with a curmudgeon tossing back an overflowing pint stating, “I’m burned out from putting in 38-hour work weeks.” Good, good stuff. Ad Age named someecards the second best way to waste time on the Web. They’ve also been written up by The New York Times, US Weekly and Gawker. And someecards fires out more than 500,000 greetings a month to inboxes around the world. As you can see, they’re just a smidgeon hipper than Hallmark. But then again, so is Rachel Ray. And heck, if you don’t find any greetings you like, you can even create your own blue greeting and have fellow cynics vote on them. Here is mine: “I started my own business just so I could can myself.”

Virtual water coolers
Meetsee Virtual Water Coolers and Meeting Rooms Submitted by Gary Schultheis on Sunday, 21 December 2008View commentsComments More and more startups offering solutions for virtual offices and companies that are spread over large geographic areas are popping up. Meetsee.com is another of these, offering virtual office space. Literally. Users log into a quasi-three-dimensional world that is a virtual office, with cubicles, meeting rooms, and a water cooler. The company representative who builds the site setup can organize the office and invite others to log in. Once there, avatars of the various co-workers interact with one another by sharing data, chatting, and even hosting virtual meetings in the virtual conference room. Streaming video, YouTube embeds, and other tools are available to interact and share information. Think of it as WebEx as an MMO (without swords or guns, of course). Mustsee hopes to address the “human side” of the virtual office and collaboration tools. It’s available for free with upgrades and additional functionality coming at a cost. The site is currently in public beta and is the product of Halcyon Worlds, based in Atlanta, Georgia. It’s cute and fun to play with, for sure, but it seems that its usefulness in the real world is fairly limited. It does integrate with some other sharing tools already well-established on the market, so it may see some growth in that regard. Most, however, will likely view this as a toy or distraction while they lead their virtual avatars around the office and play water cooler games.

Tweetanswers Answers quick
TweetAnswers Answers Quick Submitted by Gary Schultheis on Wednesday, 17 December 2008View commentsComments TweetAnswers.com, part of a suite of sites by Michael Jensen called LiveTwitting, was created specifically to allow people to ask questions online and receive live, on-demand answers. The site is the home of a Twitter tool, though there is no download or installation requirement. It works entirely through Twitter itself without plugins. Basically, users can ask questions by sending a question to @tweetanswers on Twitter and then watch the tweetanswers Twitter page or TweetAnswers.com for a response from another user with an answer. Usually, if an answer is forthcoming, there will be several. Some topics have more followers than others, of course. To answer a question, a user needs only send their answer to @tweetanswers on Twitter as well. Easy and straightforward for those who’re familiar with Twitter. The questions and answers are separated by the headers, or beginning lines of the posts. Questions use “#topic” and then the question (the topic is optional, but is more likely to get you a fast answer) while answers use an answer ID as the topic (e.g. “#topic39”). Users can subscribe to the questions and answers through Twitter or RSS or can just watch the TweetAnswers.com website, the front page of which has all current questions and answers listed center stage. This is a good idea for a Twitter ad-on and topic forum, though I fail to see how it generates any kind of revenue stream. Since it’s so easily set up and used, however, I doubt the creator really had any plans for monetizing it. These have traditionally been the best sources of real information on the Internet. Jensen’s other sites include SoloSEO.com, CityMarketer.com, LiveTwitting.com, LeaveFeedback.org, and others. TweetAnswers is not associated with Twitter. Other LiveTwitting sites include Twanslate.com and TweetBeep.com.

Info junkies
Notify.me Instant Gratification For Info-Junkies Submitted by Gary Schultheis on Sunday, 23 November 2008 If you have a list of sites, networks, or whatever that you are constantly visiting all day, whether it’s at your desk or thumbing through on your phone, you’ve doubtless tried at least one of those services that “feed” the latest updates from those sites to your email or SMS text. Well, here’s another one. But with a little twist that I’m sure many might find useful. The twist is this site’s connectivity. You can literally plug almost anything on the ‘Net into the site and add it to your info stream. On top of that, you can send the updates in a variety of ways to your pipeline: cell phone, email, you name it. If it’s connected to the Internet or has a phone number, Notify.me can update it. So if you’re into maxing your rep points on StackOverflow or have a professional network at LinkedIn, even if you love to use craigslist and don’t want to check every minute, you can use Notify.me to plug in for text messages, emails, or AIM updates on your iPhone. Or all of the above. For the true info-junkie, it’s almost a dream come true. Sorry, they can’t download directly to your thoughts with telepathy. Yet.

Social Commerce, Social Sourcing, and the Social Misfit. (aka. True horror stories of the NDA) Submitted by Gary Schultheis on Friday, 8 August 2008View commentsComments Here we are in the new web 2.0 world, and some acts of a lost era still show their ugly heads. When I hear someone in a meeting ask for our signature on their freshly printed NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) I almost have to laugh out loud aka. lol. This is not what sCommerce is about. There is absolutely nothing social about it. Burn before reading! At a time when most of the great, exciting, cool, and fun stuff on the net is free, here comes the guy with the “Official” NDA. This waste of paper is freshly printed, just cut and pasted off some free law document site just for you. The Renaissance man that he is, has cleverly made a change or two. This is to give the illusion that it was crafted and drafted by their in house counsel. This highly personalized epic is just for you, and your special one of a kind meeting. (The guy is usually from a start up or bootstrap office/garage company that for the time being, is only a one man show with big plans and strangely ambitious, yet modest talk) This meeting is going downhill fast. The death spiral has begun! They begin to tell you tall tales of their last big idea. It was shared with someone close (like you) and the company or person shut them out. They tell you that the guy seemed cool, but screwed them out of their glory, fame, and least importantly the cash. (Not a good judge of character this tells us, but he does like me? hummm) I watched Penn and Teller’s cable show rightly named Bull SH_T. The timeless Buggy Whip They said no contract in the world means anything if the guy on the other side of it is a scoundrel. If you would not do a handshake deal with the person, the one sheet of paper will not help you much. The maker, creator, or cut and paste master of this friendly NDA will tell you it is nothing personal, and that the only reason he is even meeting with you (It is kinda like a favor I guess) is because someone told him you’re a good guy. Perhaps some 6 degrees of separation Kevin Bacon thing is going on. (His old roommates cousin, knew a guy who knows your neighbor kinda from that place, and says your a good guy.) The guy today told me “he could have gone to Yahoo or Google with his idea” but he chose little old me. (That’s nice.) The NDA guy also does not need your money. He has had great success in the past, and you are the first one ever to question his precious NDA. The funny thing is he tells me he is a total social network, social commerce guy and loves to collaborate. Now that’s awesome! Does he understand social? I heard the term Co-operboobion (It is a Cooperation with Compeboobion mashup I guess) at the future of web app’s conference last year in Miami and immediately fell in love with that term. We are kinda compeboobors, but due to the “whats your key differentiators mantra and mentality” we cannot be direct compeboobors. Right? This is a community where people are happy for success of their friends, and will go out of the way to help you from their past experiences. The dreaded NDA reminds me of evil Wall Street days in the early 90’s. (That the old out of the room out of the deal days. Yuck! The Do Do Bird If someone is gonna rip you off it was probably a great idea, and it will be ripped off immediately anyway. Just do it better cheaper faster. If it is a good idea it is probably out there already, better cheaper and faster. If you do have a relationship with the person of your next meeting, the person either knows that already or you don’t have such a good relationship. Never tell someone you came to them because they seem cool, and you just passed on “Bill’s” conference call from Microsoft to do it with you instead. (”Bill is retired we all know, but would have come back for me on this deal.”) Assume the people Google’d you before you got there, and they either know what you did or they just don’t care. And please do not bring me, or any other cool tech guy who has a long personal relationship with you a NDA. Especially if it is something as bleeding edge as the wheel, buggy whip or even the mousetrap. Reminds me of the movie “Knocked Up” and they were re-creating a website that was a lame version of an existing site named Mr.Skin.Com. They were upset to see that the brain child they were building for the last year was not only alive and well but they loved it. They actually liked it better then the site they built but would not launch it until it was done. (Sound familiar anyone?) To quote one of the great thinkers of our time: Larry the cable guy. Mr. Skin as himself “I don’t care who you are, that’s funny.”

Drinks cocktails and spirits
Today I was asked by Kristen Nicole of Mashable if VOIS had it's own cocktail?
They are asking all the cool tech company's to share recipe's. Here is ours.
P'orange
The official drink and color of VOIS.com's summer beach parties. You start with a large Orange Gatorade cooler (like the ones they pour over football coaches when they win the super bowl) You fill it to the top with crushed ice and then you find a long strange item to stir the vast amount of P'orange. (ex. Old boat orr, Tire iron, Broken fishing pole, etc.) Now you pour in the unstable ingredients that should need a license or chemist to mix. 1 Bottle of Bacardi 151 Rum 1 gallon of Meyers Dark Rum 1 Gallon of Captain Morgan Rum 1 Gallon of Bacardi Gold rum Fill the rest with orange gatorade (keeps the hangover away) Top it off with 1 quart of Real Orange juice so you can tell people it has Vitamin C in it. Stir until it smokes! When you add the bottle of pure 151 rum to the mix it will melt the ice down to about half and it will smoke. The ice will melt fast in the beginning but once the Gatorade is added the melting will slow. Stir until it is so cold the mixture will provide for an evening of unbridled joy with a happy glow for it's connoisseurs as well as deep hydration from the electrolytes for keeping the hangover away. In this case an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure (and aspirins)
