By order of Presidential proclamation, the White House officially recognizes September 7, 2008 through September 13, 2008 as National Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Week. As the son of HBCU President and Chancellor, the late Dr. Marion D. Thorpe, Sr., I join the President's congratulatory acknowledgment of the many fine contributions and accomplishments of our Nation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Having lived the first 18 years of my life on the campuses of North Carolina College (NCCU) in Durham, North Carolina, Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, and Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, I am acutely aware of the tremendous societal input that HBCUs have provided over a great many years.
Additionally, I soundly acknowledge and appreciate the model of excellence set forth by Florida's HBCUs.

With the understanding that
my father implanted a zest for learning and an appreciation of Higher Education that remains with many of his charges (including me) to this day, it is no surprise to me that one of his former students, Chancellor Willie Gilchrist, has returned to lead Elizabeth City State University into the 21st century.  Of note, The very same school whereby Dr. Marion D. Thorpe, Sr. served as sixth President and first Chancellor is now ranked 26th among the best baccalaureate colleges in the South, according U.S. News and World Report's 2008 edition of "America's Best Colleges" (click ECSU link).

As relates to Florida and our 23rd U.S. Congressional District (CD 23), I anticipate and demand excellence from all HBCUs that serve the student talent pool in CD 23.  A cornerstone tenet of my P.E.A.C.E. Initiative for U.S. Congressional District 23 (Florida) is anchored by my push for Education Reform within the Kindergarten through 12th Grade curriculum goals set forth by the Public School system.  Upon making certain that our young people are prepared for college-level learning, our surrounding HBCUs must be ready and willing to admit, train, and graduate the young people of CD 23. In  essence, my P.E.A.C.E. driven Congressional platform and the collective "student-first" HBCU mission statement must productively meld in a manner that creates a circle of success for the young people of Florida's 23rd U.S. Congressional District.  Categorically, it is my firmest desire that hometown HBCU graduates will return to CD 23 for positions of leadership and for the purpose of providing community-wide education of future generations.

In closing, I pledge to do my level best to support the mission of HBCUs within Florida and within this Nation upon election to the 111th Congress on November 4, 2008.

Sincerely,

Marion D. Thorpe, Jr. MD, MPH
U.S. Congress Republican Nominee
District 23 - Florida
