American Voting Rights in 2008:
A Florida Fiasco

As we approach the end of 2007, the State of Florida is set to have Millions of votes ignored during the January 29, 2008 Presidential primary election. As a person who greatly values the protection of human rights, I am appalled that the “One man [woman], One vote” tenet of modern American Government has been trampled upon by the Democrat leadership. Florida Voters once deemed as “disenfranchised,” are now exiled to an “island of insignificance.” To say the least, many voters are demoralized and dismayed by actions emanating from Democrat Party infighting.
A glancing assessment of this intra-Party infighting yields the false perception that Senator Bill Nelson and Representative Alcee Hastings were attempting to protect the voting rights of Democrat Floridians last week when they took their own Party (aka, the Democrat National Committee) to Court demanding the validity of Florida Delegates following the January 29, 2008 Florida primary. Categorically, all is not as it appears in the Sunshine State. The truth of the matter is that Nelson and Hastings (and numerous other Democrat officials) served as the impetus that led Florida to move its Democrat primary election date to the head of the pack amongst other states. It should also be noted that Nelson and Hastings participated with the fore-knowledge that they were breaking the very same rules that they helped to create for the National Democrat Party. In the event that this convoluted voting fiasco is difficult to follow, I offer the following mock analogy:

1)      Nelson and Hastings decide in 2005 that all Florida drivers must adhere to the 55 MPH speed limit;

2)      After having been caught driving 85 MPH in 2007, Nelson and Hastings demand that a Judge immediately and retro-actively lifts the state-wide speed-limit to 85 MPH;

3)      Nelson and Hastings plead for the Court’s mercy based on their goal of re-writing the very same speed limit  laws of Florida that they set two years prior to being ticketed;

4)      Though it is widely known that Nelson and Hastings set the initial 55 MPH speed limit, the speeding duo cries foul when they are not granted amnesty for breaking their own rules.

In the simplest of terms, Florida’s Democrat voters have been alienated from the electoral process by the missteps of their own Democrat leadership.
As the 2008 election approaches, I will continue my focus on the importance of counting each and every vote. In this light, I ask the following question: “How can the Democrat Party bill itself as a Party that protects citizens’ rights, when in fact the Democrat leadership has completely undermined voter confidence and participation amongst Florida’s 4.1 Million registered Democrats?”
Sincerely,
